The CPA exam is designed to assess a candidate’s knowledge and skills in accounting and business. It consists of four core sections, each focusing on essential areas of the profession:

Auditing and Attestation (AUD)

This section covers the principles and procedures of auditing, including internal controls, risk assessment, evidence gathering, and audit reporting. Candidates will also learn about ethics and professional responsibilities required in public accounting.

Business Environment and Concepts (BEC)

BEC focuses on the broader business context in which CPAs operate. Topics include corporate governance, economic concepts, financial management, strategic planning, and information systems. This section also tests communication skills, with written response questions.

 

Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR)

This is a core subject covering U.S. GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), including preparation and analysis of financial statements for public and private companies, governmental and not-for-profit organizations. It includes topics like revenue recognition, leases, and financial disclosures.

Regulation (REG)

This section focuses on ethics, professional conduct, federal taxation (individual and business), and business law. It prepares candidates to handle compliance and advisory roles, dealing with income tax, business structures, and regulatory issues.

The CPA USA credential is a professional designation awarded by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). It certifies expertise in accounting and is recognized across the United States and internationally.

Eligibility varies by state but typically includes a bachelor's degree with 120–150 semester hours, including coursework in accounting and business. Some states also require work experience under a licensed CPA.

The CPA exam has four sections:

Business Environment and Concepts (BEC) (Note: BEC is being phased out and replaced under the CPA Evolution model with discipline-specific sections).

Each section of the CPA exam is 4 hours long, delivered via computer-based testing, and includes multiple-choice questions, task-based simulations, and written communication tasks (only in BEC).

Once you pass your first section, you must pass the remaining three sections within an 18-month rolling window.

Yes, international candidates can take the exam through NASBA and approved international testing centers. They must meet the educational requirements of a U.S. state board.

CPA Evolution is a new model launching in 2024 that introduces a Core + Discipline structure, focusing more on technology and specialized skills. All candidates will take three core sections and choose one discipline.
